DIY Crib Skirt & Nursery Updates

Any easy, Velcro-on crib skirt from fabric scraps.

Hey guys! So, I hope you're not sick of nursery stuff, because it's all nursery all the time over here. That's actually totally false - I'm trying to work on what feels like a million fronts at once - but the nursery is definitely top priority, and where I happen to have made shareable progress this week. So, let's take a look at this quick and easy project.

I picked up this fabric remnant at Goodwill last summer, and it's already served us well as a valance in Lou's room before the purple makeover.

DIY Valance from Fabric Scraps

This was ridiculously easy because there's no need for it to be complicated. You guys know I don't sew, so I started off by ironing and hemming the bottom and side edges of the fabric with no-sew hem tape. I didn't bother to hem the top of the fabric because I was going to attach it to the mattress spring using Velcro - like so.

Those white strips are long strips of adhesive Velcro (like this) that I attached first to the spring and then matched up on the fabric. At the corners, I cut small slits into the material to fit it around the braces that attach to the crib.

...And that's pretty much it. I just attached the pieces of fabric to the mattress spring, making my way around the crib. And voila:

Easy DIY Crib Skirt

You can see in these photos that I'm making use of the under crib space for storage, which is highly recommended, and which is what prompted me to go for a crib skirt to begin with. And, I don't know, an hour later, I had one. I prefer the Velcro version to the traditional skirts that can bunch up, and doing it this way allows for less fabric and no sewing. For the win! All told, the $2 for the fabric plus the $8 for the Velcro equals a $10 crib skirt - so it's pretty thrifty, too.

As for nursery progress: I hesitate to show some shots of the nursery before it's done, but I figure it's only fair. After all, these things are a process, and it's refreshing sometimes to actually acknowledge that. As of this morning, here we are:

I am pretty stoked with how it's shaping up, although I am thinking through ways to pack in more clothing storage. I'm totally at the max of the dresser right now, and I have no faith in any family members - or myself- to refrain from buying more. But, there's a to do list. Wanna see?

  • Stencil crib wall
  • Install hanging clothes storage
  • Hang art
  • Hang Lou's special art gift
  • Fix toy barn
  • Make striped green pillow covers
  • Finish mobile
  • Make/buy new changing pad cover?
  • Stencil crib sheets?
  • Decoupage star
  • Tidy up remaining large toy storage
  • Set up trash can/wipe box/wet bag
  • Set up area for guests (e.g., side table, charging station, make bed, etc. - my sister is coming for Baby Watch 2015 on Sunday, and this is her room too!)

And that's it! It's a long list, but I think I can bang it out tomorrow or Friday. Wish me luck!
